Before you message a single artist, decide roughly what you want to look like. A red Banarasi saree with a classic bun asks for a different artist than a pastel lehenga with soft makeup. Your outfit, your jewellery, the venue and the time of the ceremony all push the answer one way or the other.

The salon work starts months earlier
Skin and hair take time to change. Pick one salon, tell them your wedding date, and let them space the appointments out — a facial the week before is not the same as a routine that started in month one.
Nothing new in the last two weeks. No first-time facial, no new product, no bleach. If your skin is going to react, you want that to happen in month two, not the night before the sangeet.
Mehendi is its own booking
Your makeup artist will almost never be your mehendi artist. Book them separately, and book early — a good mehendi artist in Varanasi is spoken for through the whole wedding season.

- Paisleys, vines, flowers and peacocks, worked densely across the palm. The safest choice with a red Banarasi saree.
- Bridal
- Covers more of the arm, often the feet too, and can hide personal details — your names, the baraat, the mandap. Ask for this at least a week ahead; it is not a walk-in design.
- Minimal
- Palms and fingertips only, or a single band on the wrist. Good for the haldi and the sangeet, when you still want your hands free.
If mehendi is happening for aunts, cousins and half the guest list, say so when you book. One artist working alone will take hours, and the queue always forms around the bride. Ask how many artists they will bring, what the per-guest design costs, and whether travel is charged on top.
Let the outfit and the jewellery lead
A Banarasi saree has a strong character of its own, and so does the jewellery that goes with it. You are not trying to match everything to everything. You are trying to make sure two loud things are not competing in the same photograph.
Ask for a centre parting
A side parting fights the chain, and it will sit crooked all evening.
Wear it up
Loose hair swallows a big earring from every angle but one. A bun keeps the face and the jewellery in the same frame.
Lighter outfit, lighter face
Yellow and pastel wash out under full bridal makeup. Save the heavy base for the wedding day.
With a nath, keep the eyes softly defined. With a heavy haar, an updo stops the two from overlapping. Let one thing be the loud thing.
